Since August 2004, the ECORD Science Operator (ESO) has undertaken eight mission-specific platform (MSP) expeditions for ECORD on behalf of IODP. MSP expeditions take place in environments, which are not accessible to other IODP drillships (Chikyu and JOIDES Resolution), like ice-covered seas and shallow waters.
