After a two-month expedition in the Gulf of Cadiz, the US research and drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution has arrived in the port of Lisbon on 17 January 2012. On this occasion the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) held a media conference and VIP events were organised by ECORD and IODP-Portugal in Lisbon at Centro Cultural de Macau on 18 January 2012.

Earthquakes, Climate Change & Rivers of Sand: Six Million Years of Earth History uncovered in the Gulf of Cadiz
During the media conference the scientific leaders of the expedition, Prof. Dorrik Stow (Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh) and Dr. Francisco J. Hernández-Molina (University of Vigo) reported on their principal findings and important new discoveries. Prof. Fernando Barriga (University of Lisbon) outlined Portugal’s role and involvement in the IODP. Dr. Patricia Maruéjol (ECORD) provided information on Europe’s role within the IODP, which is one of the most ambitious geoscientific research programmes worldwide.
