ECORD and Japan entities are finalising the launch of the International Ocean Drilling Programme – IODP³ (IODP-cubed) after 2024, open to international members and based on the implementation of mission-specific scientific drilling expeditions.
Following the online-only Phase-1 Workshop in January 2023, the Phase-2 Workshop will be held in-hybrid form. The aim is to gather researchers representing promising drilling ideas that emerged during and after Phase-1 Workshop to present and discuss their scientific and operational plans to prepare for MSP and Chikyu drilling proposals to be submitted for IODP³. The Workshop is open to~ 100 participants from any country.
The Workshop aims to encourage ‘team forming’ in view of submission of new scientific drilling and legacy data projects.
The Workshop is expected to offer the following benefits to participants:
- Allow a direct contact between proponents and operators
- Allow a direct contact between proponents and experienced senior scientists who will provide scientific advice
- Provide an opportunity to build a team
- Move from Design to Implementation
- 6 hours by train from Tokyo, 4 hours by train from Osaka.
- Far from major cities, aimed at fostering focused discussions (a retreat-like event).
- 3 full days of workshop and a 2-day field trip (either 1 day or 2 days), allowing ample time for discussions. Participants on site will require a full week.
- We plan to recommend several hotels within walking distance of the workshop venue, for each respective budget (TBD).
- Notable local geology includes Neogene accretionary prism, forearc basin, and plutonic rocks. The region’s designation as a Geopark and World Heritage site. Lovely in-house hot springs in some hotels.

Registration
Registration to the event is open for any scientist from any country from 30 November to 23 December 2023. Please proceed to the registration site via the button at the bottom of this page.
Note that a (moderate) registration fee must be paid at the time of registration.
Participants are invited to submit an abstract of ideas for drilling proposals or legacy asset project proposals (e.g., LEAPs, SPARCs) to be presented and discussed during the meeting. This aims to obtain feedback and guidance from the IODP3 Operators, ESSAC, J-DESC representatives, and members of the Workshop Science Steering Committee. Abstracts can stem from ideas previously discussed in the Phase-1 online Workshop, newly emerged concepts post-Phase-1, or drilling proposals already submitted and currently with the IODP Science Evaluation Panel. Multiple authors contributing to the same abstract are encouraged to participate in the Workshop. Abstracts should reflect multidisciplinary, multinational teams addressing the science objectives outlined in the 2050 Science Framework. Participants will attach the abstract when registering on the registration site.
Please log in to your My Page with the ID you set during registration to confirm or change your registration details, submit or revise your abstract, and make payments for participation fees, etc.
- Changes to registration details, abstract submission and revision: Deadline is February 15.
- Payment of participation fees, etc.: Deadline is March 1.
